A. Bethany Village offers a vibrant lifestyle filled with conveniences and daily opportunities for warm and interesting social interactions with others. There’s a special energy that comes from living in a multi-faceted community, along with a sense of belonging, of being among extended family. But many residents believe the most important aspect of living at Bethany is having a secure plan for the future. With lifetime priority access to a full continuum of services, Bethany residents and their family members have peace of mind knowing that they will have access to assisted living, skilled care and memory support services, even if they exhaust their financial resources through no fault of their own. At Bethany, as your need for services changes over your lifetime, you have the opportunity to order home health services into your residential living residence or relocate either to MapleWood Assisted Living or The Oaks Skilled Nursing to secure the services you need. Most importantly, you can be among people you call friends and those you trust, no matter what life brings.
A. The cost depends partly on the size and style of residence that you choose. All residents pay a one-time entrance fee plus a monthly fee. The cost of each varies based on the type and size of residence that you choose. Additionally, the cost of the entrance fee will vary based on the type of residency agreement you choose. At Bethany Village, you can choose from three different agreements, including a 100 percent refundable plan. If two people live in the residence, there is no additional entrance fee. The costs vary widely by neighborhood, with entrance fees starting as low as $104,800 this year and monthly fees starting as low as $1,055. Because there are so many choices, we recommend that you meet with a Retirement Counselor to find out which entrance fee plan and living arrangement makes the most sense for you. No matter which neighborhood you choose, you have access to the same amenities and benefits as other residents.
A. Yes. At Bethany Village, you can choose from three different entrance fee plans. Two of these plans will refund all or part of the entrance fee according to the terms and conditions of your residency agreement. One of these plans offers a 50 percent refund, while the other provides a 100 percent refund. A third option is a non-refundable plan, called the standard plan. The standard fee amortizes over the first 60 months of residency. This means that for the first 60 months you live at Bethany, you could receive at least a partial refund of your entrance fee. After 60 months, however, no refundable portion of the standard entrance fee remains. Refunds are paid within 30 days after Bethany Village receives an entrance fee from the next person who occupies your residence, and you no longer reside in any accommodation at Bethany Village.
A. It depends on your financial goals and circumstances. Our retirement counselors are available to assist you in reviewing the three contract options to see which one is the best fit for you. The standard entrance fee is the most affordable way to enjoy the Bethany lifestyle, regardless of which neighborhood you select. While the 100 percent refundable contract requires a larger upfront payment, it offers the most value over time because all of the funds will be returned to you or your estate. The 50 percent refundable program offers more long-term value than the standard contract, but is more affordable than the 100 percent refundable contract. You will want to refer to the residency agreement for a full explanation of the terms and conditions for refundable entrance fees.
A. The amount of your monthly fee is based on the style of residence you choose and the array of services provided in that neighborhood. Typically, the monthly fee includes interior and exterior maintenance of the residence, some or all of the utilities, 24-hour emergency call systems, transportation and access to all of the Bethany Village amenities and common areas. Bethany Village residents also have the benefit of paying reduced rates for assisted living, if ever needed.
A. With more than 20 different floor plans in five residential living neighborhoods, Bethany Village offers so many living options that it can accommodate a wide range of people age 55 plus. Before being accepted for residency, you would be asked to show that you have enough income and assets to support your living expenses through your projected lifespan. This calculation is made through a system maintained by an outside actuary. (If you outlive your resources, you would be eligible for Bethany’s Benevolent Care program. See below for more information.) Generally, someone with a retirement income who owns a home in the area or has equivalent assets can afford the security and benefits of the Bethany lifestyle. In some cases, people with lower assets are able to live at Bethany if a relative agrees to place a designated sum of money in trust. In these cases, the trust is released and the funds are returned if not needed to cover the resident’s expenses. A Bethany retirement counselor will be happy to help you understand the best options for you.
A. A significant part of Bethany’s not-for-profit mission is to ensure that residents who outlive their resources through no fault of their own are able to continue living at Bethany Village. These residents are able to apply for and receive support to cover their expenses, regardless of whether they live in residential living, assisted living or in skilled care. The Asbury Foundation actively seeks donations for Benevolent Care, including a special endowment fund, to offset the costs of providing this support.
A. If you ever require services in MapleWood Assisted Living or in The Oaks Skilled Nursing, you will always have preference over non-resident applicants for available openings. This is an important aspect of life at Bethany. Residents and their family members have peace of mind knowing that if services are ever needed, Bethany will ensure that care is provided throughout your life.
A. Bethany Village residents who move into MapleWood Assisted Living pay lower fees than someone who moves into MapleWood from outside the Bethany Village campus. This savings is one of many good reasons to move to Bethany Village while you are able to enjoy all of the benefits of the lifestyle.
A. Bethany Village is a Type C, fee-for-service continuing care retirement community. Because a Type C residency agreement does not offset the future cost of health-care services, the Internal Revenue Service does not recognize any part of the entrance fee or residential living monthly fees toward a medical deduction. However, it is possible that fees paid for assisted living or for skilled care services may be eligible for a medical deduction. Please see a tax analyst to learn whether your financial circumstances would allow you to deduct these expenses from your income.
A. Bethany Village is owned and operated by Asbury Atlantic Inc., a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation and the legal entity responsible for providing services to the residents of Bethany Village. In addition to Bethany Village, Asbury Atlantic owns and operates two other continuing care retirement communities – Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD, and Springhill in Erie, PA. Asbury Atlantic is owned and operated solely by Asbury Communities, a separate 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, which also operates two other continuing care retirement communities, the not-for-profit Asbury Foundation Inc. and other entities.
A. Under direction of the Executive Director, a management team is responsible for the day-to-day operations and overall functioning of Bethany Village. Several governing boards, comprised of volunteer members, provide high-level oversight. The Bethany Village Board of Governors works directly with the Executive Director and is focused exclusively on Bethany Village’s programs, quality of care and service, master campus planning, and fundraising activities (in conjunction with the Asbury Foundation). The Board of Governors makes recommendations to the Asbury Atlantic, Inc. Board of Directors, which is legally responsible for control of Bethany Village. Additionally, the Asbury Atlantic Board has the primary responsibility for approving the budget and maintaining financial health as well as monitoring quality of care and services. The Asbury Communities Inc. Board of Directors is focused on enhancing the strength of the entire organization, ensuring fulfillment of its mission and tax-exempt purpose, and recognizing its full potential for providing services to seniors.
A. Bethany Village does not have any individual long-term debt. Instead, all of its long-term debt is part of the Pennsylvania Obligated Group, which includes Springhill. Each community pays its share of the long-term debt; however, being part of the Pennsylvania Obligated Group enables each community to obtain the capital funds it requires at a lower interest rate than it could if it were to borrow the funds individually. Since the inception of the Pennsylvania Obligated Group, Bethany Village has always paid its portion of the long-term debt.
A. Bethany Village has active and vibrant resident association groups that promote resident interests, facilitate communication, interact with management, and organize events and activities. Each building on campus has a representative on the Resident Council, which generally meets monthly.
A. Yes. Bethany Village welcomes all people, regardless of religious traditions and practices. Bethany residents have access to a variety of spiritual programming on campus. Our Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Wellness is an ordained United Methodist minister, and our Associate Chaplain is a Deacon in the Episcopal Church. The Spiritual Wellness department offers weekly ecumenical Protestant worship services in our various levels of living, as well as weekly Bible studies and a program of Spiritual Enrichment in The Oaks Skilled Nursing. Catholic Mass and Rosary are provided regularly by clergy and staff from a nearby Catholic Church. Additionally, a number of local congregations of various denominations offer transportation for Bethany Village residents to their Sunday services.
